What Is a Prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a certified dental specialist in Prosthetic and Implant Dentistry. This specialty requires an additional three years of advanced training after completing the four-year dental school degree. The advanced program focuses on the study and practice of complex reconstructive and implant dentistry, ensuring expertise in restoring function, aesthetics, and oral health.

Dr. Maiko Sakai received her Doctoral degree in Dental Medicine from Harvard University.  She graduated top five in her class and earned several awards for her achievements, including the Dr. Norman B. Nesbett Award for clinical excellence.  

Dr. Sakai then continued her dental education at the University of Illinois at Chicago by completing a 3-year specialty training in prosthodontics, earning both Specialist Certification and a Master’s degree in Oral Science.  Her Master’s degree involved research on the optical properties of zirconia, all-ceramic and dental cement materials.  During her prosthodontic training, she served as the chief resident and was involved in pre-doctoral education.  She has extensive training in full mouth rehabilitation, involving complex and cosmetic restorations.   

Upon completion of her training, Dr. Sakai returned to the Harvard School of Dental Medicine as a full-time faculty member.  She worked in the Department of Biomaterial Science and Restorative Dentistry for several years prior to relocating to Ottawa with her growing family.  While maintaining her clinical practice as a staff Prosthodontist at the Harvard faculty practice, she facilitated an encouraging and warm learning environment at the school as a course director, clinical instructor, and mentor.  Her passion and achievements in teaching the next generation of dentists were recognized and awarded with the prestigious Outstanding Teaching Faculty Awards for two consecutive years.  Dr. Sakai has lectured extensively and has published multiple articles on translational and clinical research in colour science of dental restorative materials and implant education.  She also served as a reviewer for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.

After moving to Ottawa, she joined Prosthodontics on Chamberlain as an associate prosthodontist, working alongside Dr. Stewart Hum until the practice closed in July 2025. She opened Classic Prosthodontics to continue the legacy of Ottawa’s trusted prosthodontic care.

Dr. Maiko Sakai is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Board Certified Specialist in Prosthodontics.  She is also an active member of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, the Canadian Dental Association, the Ontario Dental Association, and the Ottawa Dental Society. 

In her spare time, Dr. Sakai enjoys spending time with her husband, Andrew, and their three children.
